GEOMETRY SELECTION
Square End or Corner Radius?
Start with the part drawing. A sharp 90° internal corner requires a square profile; if a radius is permitted, a corner-radius tool changes the load at the cutting corner.

When is a square end required?
Square end mills are used when the floor-to-wall junction of a pocket, slot or shoulder must be a sharp 90° corner. The sharp cutting corner is also a sensitive point in unstable or interrupted cuts.
What does a corner radius change?
A small radius removes the sharp point and can distribute cutting load around the corner, supporting resistance to corner wear and small chips. It leaves the same radius on the part.
The drawing controls the choice
The tool radius limits the smallest internal corner that can be produced. A tool with a larger radius cannot be used where the drawing requires a smaller one.
