CUTTING EDGES

What Does Flute Count Change?

Flute count is the number of cutting edges around the tool. More flutes do not automatically mean a better or faster tool.

Role in feed calculation

Table feed is calculated with vf = fz × z × n, where z is the flute count. If fz and RPM stay constant, changing the number of flutes changes the calculated table feed.

Chip space

With the same tool diameter, flute design affects the space available for chips. Alpine aluminium families use three flutes and wide chip spaces, while the current steel and hardened-steel families use four flutes.
