Why Does an End Mill Vibrate?
Chatter marks or unstable cutting noise rarely have a single cause. The tool, holder, machine and workpiece form one rigidity chain.

Check the rigidity chain first
Excessive tool overhang, weak workholding, dirty contact surfaces, an unsuitable holder or system play can increase vibration tendency. Use the shortest safe overhang and secure workholding.
Runout and unequal load
Runout can make one flute carry more load than the others, creating irregular wear, noise and surface marks. Inspect the collet, holder, tool shank and contact surfaces together.
Change one variable at a time
- Verify workpiece and tool clamping.
- Check overhang and holder runout.
- Inspect the cutting edges for adhesion, chipping or uneven wear.
- Confirm that chips leave the cutting zone.
- Change one cutting variable at a time and record the result.
