Chipping or Dull Cutting Edges?
Dulling usually produces a progressive, relatively regular wear band. Chipping appears as irregular or sudden loss of cutting-edge material.

Regular wear
A comparatively even wear band can widen behind the cutting edge. Surface quality may decline gradually while force and heat rise. Similar marks on all flutes support a progressive-wear diagnosis.
Edge chipping
A chipped edge may look jagged or have a missing fragment. Impact, vibration, recutting chips, excessive load and low rigidity are possible causes. Damage concentrated on one flute also calls for a runout check.
Do not mistake built-up material for a chip
Workpiece material can adhere to the cutting edge, especially in adhesion-prone alloys. Clean and inspect the tool under magnification before deciding that carbide has broken away.
